Army Awards Biomass Contracts

  • Thirteen companies have been awarded contracts by the United States army to build power plants that run on biomass power. These plants will serve military bases. This is the fourth and final installment of a $7 billion series that began in May.
  • Those awarded contracts will be able to compete for future contracts as part of a service wide green energy project. The initial project began in August of 2011. Along with biomass, these contracts also cover geothermal, solar and wind power plants.
  • In 2005, the Energy Policy Act was passed, requiring federal agencies to purchase 7.5% renewable energy by 2013 and 25% by 2025.
  • Seventeen companies were tapped to provide the army with wind power, along with five who will deal with geothermal.
  • All work to grant recipients will happen through private sector financing. No army or defense construction appropriations will be involved.
  • The army is very excited about moving forward with this and has claimed it a win for all involved.
